Årstabergsparken in Årstadal is south of Stockholm. The expansion and modern transformation in the Årstadal district with its 14,000 inhabitants has come into focus in the debate about the place of children in the densely populated capital.

However, the park project is what really “stands out” in the area. And everyone involved agrees about the challenge and the goals have been bold and high, not least with respect to nature and sustainability. The park project has been about making a new mountain park out of the natural land areas, undeveloped areas and areas that are “left over” after the buildings have taken their place.

Shifting to circular thinking has been a watchword for both client and executing architect. And the choice of sustainable wood was a natural part of this goal. In Årstabergsparken, those involved have created a completely new type of mountain park based on the location’s conditions and developed them.
The park becomes more “natural” because, among other things, grown trees are in place. There has also been a goal with the City of Stockholm that Årstabergsparken should facilitate the spread of oak and oak-living species as well as coniferous forest birds.
